ASDA FM

What is ASDA FM and who are the target audience of the station?

ASDA FM is an in-store radio that is played to staff and customers. The music varies during the day depending on what time it is because different groups of people shop at different times. Their target audience is their regular customers; they reach reach 18,000,000 listeners weekly - it is the biggest radio station in the UK. The reason it is so successful is because they have a captive audience, so the customers have to listen while they're shopping - they don't have a say in the matter and that's how ASDA FM sustains.

What is the purpose of ASDA FM and other in-store radio?

The purpose of ASDA FM and other in-store radio is to entertain customers while they shop, and at the same time help the promotion of products - enabling customers to listen to the latest deals in-store rather than having to look for themselves. It's a clever tactic to use in advertising products because the captive audience are forced to listen to it when they're shopping around.

What different music formats/styles/genres does the station play?

In the daytime the station plays pop music/chart music similar to what Radio 1 has, and as the evening approaches things take a funky twist, playing 80s electropop, hip-hop, UK dubstep and dance tracks for the late night shoppers - it just plays the stuff Annie Mac plays.

Who might the different formats appeal to? (think of the different types of shopper in-store at different times)

The different music formats they play, including pop music, dance music and hip-hop might appeal to younger customers, such as parents with young children doing their daily or weekly shopping - they might like to listen to mainstream pop, and the Disney-style stuff would appeal to young children who are shopping with their parents. At night the urban music like dubstep might appeal to the young-adult/student customers who want to take a break from studying or work.

How does the style/genre/format of music change according to who is likely to be in the store?

Another technique is is playing a strong song after the news, which is good because the news is generally very serious and formal, so playing an upbeat song to lighten the mood is a good idea.
